Dalai Lama WikiLeak: Climate Change More Important Than Independence Now

today:

negevrockcity:

I didn’t write this article at FastCo, but I’m reblogging it due to the holy-crap-its-interesting factor. In a nutshell: The Dalai Lama wants to shift US/international support from the struggle for Tibetan independence to the struggle to stop climate change in the Himalayas. Impressive.

“Melting glaciers, deforestation, and increasingly polluted water from mining projects were problems that ‘cannot wait,’ but the Tibetans could wait five to 10 years for a political solution,” said the Dalai Lama.

Haiti should be an unlikely backdrop for the latest failure of the humanitarian relief system. The country is small and accessible and, following last January’s earthquake, it hosts one of the largest and best-funded international aid deployments in the world. An estimated 12,000 non-governmental organisations are there. Why then, have at least 2,500 people died of cholera, a disease that’s easily treated and controlled?
